Common questions about OT-2 and other products,Please click here.
Can I use Opentrons pipettes without OT-2?
It is not recommended to use Opentrons pipettes without OT-2. The pipette interface contains the connection to the pipette motor itself and an EEPROM containing only the pipette serial number.
All motor control circuits and the logic that drives the motors to suck up liquid are completely contained within the robot's circuitry. In this sense, users will need to almost completely reverse engineer our robot to operate the pipette with any level of precision.
Furthermore, we cannot guarantee any performance level when the pipette is not used with our robots, this must be verified by the user.
What materials are used in Opentrons pipettes?
The components of Opentrons pipettes that may come into direct contact with liquids or vapors from reagents are made of the following materials: PC-ABS (outer and inner housing), NBR (inner plunger O-ring seal) and silicone (External O-ring seal).
How chemical resistant are Opentrons pipettes?
Opentrons pipettes are designed and tested to handle a wide range of aqueous solutions commonly used in biochemistry. Our pipettes have not been tested for use with solvents and other non-aqueous chemicals.
We recommend using the chart below before using solvents with the OT-2 to determine any possible interactions. If you do not see the chemical you will be using below, consult the Chemical Compatibility Database.
OT-2 Pipette Chemical Compatibility Chart:
Rating – Chemical Effects
A – Excellent
B – Good: Minor effects, slight corrosion or discoloration.
C – Fair: Moderate effects, continuous use not recommended. Softening or loss of strength and swelling may occur.
D – Severe effects: No use recommended.
E – Information not available.
Can I recycle Opentrons pipette tips and pipette stands?
Pipette Tips:
Material: Opentrons tips are made of 100% polypropylene (PP).
Recycling Process: PP plastics are often stamped with a "resin code" (PP is 5), which are useful in the recycling process as they indicate the type of plastic. This ensures the separation and efficient recycling of different plastic types.
Hazardless micropipette tips can be collected for recycling. Collect in puncture-proof container. BL1 and BL2 tips must be decontaminated with bleach or alcohol before being placed in the recycling bin. Drug contamination can also hinder tip recovery.
Be sure to check with your institution's Environment, Health and Safety office first. Sometimes, finding pipette tips in a recycling collection container automatically treats the entire item as "trash." Your agency's recycling program rules will depend on EPA, OSHA, local hazardous waste regulations, and available municipal recycling services.
P20 and P1000 Tip Holders:
Material: Opentrons P20 and P1000 Tip Holders are made of ABS plastic.
Recycling Process: For more information on recycling ABS plastic, visit 3drific.com
ABS plastic uses recycling number 7.
ABS needs to be processed separately. On an industrial scale, this is automated through froth flotation, where a water-oil mixture helps separate ABS from other particles.
At the domestic and municipal levels, this is mainly done during the collection stage. ABS should be stored in separate containers and shipped with the same separation. Some cities may employ workers to manually separate plastics, but this is obviously error-prone and the separation results at the collection stage may not be ideal.
Once the ABS plastic has been separated out as much as possible, the next step in the recycling process is grinding.
Other resources such as TerraCycle are designed specifically for tip racks.
P300 Tip Rack:
Material: Opentrons P300 Tip Rack is made of polycarbonate plastic (PC).
Recycling Process: For more information on recycling PC plastic, see https://www.terracycle.com
PC plastic uses recycling number 7.
This is a notoriously difficult process, so we recommend choosing a company like TerraCycle or contacting your agency to check the rules for their recycling program.
