Standard Operating Procedure for Rapid Moisture Analyzer Testing

For standardized and repeatable temperature calibration or adjustment of a halogen moisture analyzer, the manufacturer's temperature calibration kit must be used. The kit contains a black disc that simulates the surface of the sample. Black provides a reference with maximum radiation absorption and therefore high sensitivity to changes in the system. This is optimal for achieving high repeatability and reproducibility of calibration. The temperature of the sample during the measurement depends on its absorption properties and therefore may differ from the temperature measured on the black disk.

Factors that need to be considered for temperature calibration. The factors described below are potential sources of error that may affect temperature calibration and may cause deviations in accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility. It is recommended to avoid or minimize these effects. If they cannot be eliminated, ensure that they are at least the same or similar effects as those present during daily operation of the moisture analyzer.

Why do we need to perform performance testing on moisture analyzers? The moisture analyzer consists of a heating unit and an integrated weighing unit. Any component failure, or external influences such as ambient temperature or airflow, can cause erroneous results. In order to verify the accuracy of the results and, if necessary, compliance with quality regulations, it must be ensured that both components, the weighing and heating units, are functioning properly.

What needs to be tested? The deviation of the rapid moisture analyzer is mainly affected by three factors: 1. Heating unit 2. Weighing unit 3. The temperature deviation of the sample itself may be larger than the weighing value deviation, and will have a greater impact on the moisture measurement results. Therefore, the frequency of testing focusing on temperature deviation is higher than the frequency of testing focusing on weighing accuracy.

The following tests are recommendations for performance monitoring of moisture analyzers: 1. Temperature calibration 2. SmartCal test 3. Sensitivity test (weighing unit) A systematic moisture analyzer can minimize risks and costs. With the right SOP, testing is a piece of cake.
